Welcome to the 9th International Workshop on Microfactories

It is our utmost pleasure and honor to welcome all the participants and guests of the 9th International Workshop on Microfactories (IWMF'14) to University of Hawai’i at Manoa in Honolulu, Hawai’i, USA. This Workshop builds on a more than decade-long history of successful events with the participation and support of leading researchers and institutions from across the world in the important paradigm-shifting fields of microengineering and desktop factories of the future.

The conference has been organized to provide interesting and challenging presentations, productive discussions and international publications of theoretical and experimental studies related to the microengineering. All papers were included in the proceedings of IWMF’2014 and the Final Program booklet that includes the paper abstracts. Authors from 11 countries have contributed to the Workshop and 49 papers have been selected for oral and poster presentation. The papers were divided into 7 topics spanning the two-day Workshop. The topics are:

  • Micromachining
  • Micro Machines and Systems
  • Applied Nanotechnology
  • Texture and patterns
  • Microfabrication
  • Micro Forming and Joining
  • Micro Laser Processing
Our three keynote speakers, Professors Svetan Ratchev, Marc Madou, and Makoto Nakamura, deserve our special appreciation and gratitude for agreeing to share their profound insights into key scientific and technological issues that are central to the further advancement of the microfactory paradigm.

We would like to thank all authors and Workshop participants, without whom IWMF’14 would not be possible. Many thanks are also due to the scientific and the organizing committee members for their help through all phases of Workshop planning. The generous support of University of Hawai’i at Manoa is also gratefully acknowledged. We hope that you will enjoy the Workshop and your stay in Honolulu and the Oahu area.
